we got our miracle...
wow! little hydra (coyote with swollen head) was spared thanks to another coyote who needed a friend! We were given a smaller baby who had been cuddled by the "rehabilitator" who had her, so she thinks she's a domestic animal and whines and follows us around. She needed someone to teach her that she is a coyote, and poor hydra needed someone to play with who wouldn't reject her, and voila! Hydra still has a swollen head, but is doing okay other than that - not falling down as much, and the baby adores her. So our two little girls are going to live together while they both try to figure out if they're wild coyotes or not. If hydra gets better, and baby gets shy of us, we can release them both. If that doesn't happen, well, at least they have each other to be friends with.
there were lots of ups and downs at the rehabilitation center today. ups included our little coyote babies, the fact that tonka has moved into his new enclosure (and loves it), that the 4 baby skunks we have are suddenly rooming with a baby possum that fit itself through the chain link to share their food, and that the two "feral" cats we took in have become lap loves - i groomed them both today for sooooo long, and they just purred and purred...
the downs included that a duck is self-mutilating her infected leg, that our turkey vulture seems to have killed a fledgling hawk we were rehabilitating, that a juvenile crow was brought in with a broken hip, and had to be euthanized, and that i got to hand-feed a bunch of dead baby mice to some hungry ducks and chickens. that was tough.
so yeah. life really happens at this place - no social graces and all that. i like it most of the time, but every once in a while i miss my safe office - where i might have to tell someone they didn't get a job, but nobody is about to die.
look, a blatant subject change! i made rice krispy treats... with cheap marshmallows and not super fresh krispies. i'll still eat them, but i don't think i'll serve them to other people, except shaggy. he eats anything.
shadow also eats anything - move aside dirt devil, i've got a chubby kitty! well, not actually that chubby. he must have a metabolism like no other, since all he does is eat and then hide under the bed. today he ate a whole bugle (you know, those snack things) by himself. yesterday there was corn, and black bean juice leftover on a plate once shaggy was done with it. once the mangoes are ripe i'll see what he does with a bite.

That is so heartening to hear about the coyote. Not so heartening about the rest of the death involved in the post, but you're right - life definitely happens there.
